Ukraine's President Warns of New Russian Strikes on Infrastructure Following Winter Defense

Ukraine's Successful Winter Defense

According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the country successfully defended against Russian attacks this winter, but he warned that Russia is now preparing new strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. As of March 1, 2023, Ukraine has endured 1,467 days of Russia's full-scale invasion. This invasion intensified with the start of a concentrated winter assault that began on December 6, 2022. The conflict has evolved into a war of attrition, heavily focused on degrading civilian infrastructure.

During this winter offensive, Russian forces attempted to hit over 700 different targets, including more than 50 missiles. This winter alone, Russia launched over 35,000 drones, missiles, and bombs at Ukraine. In this context, Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked:

'The Russians wanted to turn this winter into the destruction of Ukraine and Ukrainians. But Ukraine did not break. We preserved our energy system.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This highlights the resilience of Ukraine's energy grid despite the pressure of numerous attacks.

The Critical Need for International Support

Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of responding to every threat, emphasizing:

'We must respond to every threat and shoot down Russian targets, as many as possible.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

He pointed out that even countries with more advanced air defense systems than those currently provided to Ukraine cannot stop all attacks. 'Even in Gulf countries, which have higher quality air defense systems than our partners have provided us so far, and have a greater number of systems — they still do not shoot down all ballistic missiles,' he noted. This underscores a global challenge in countering modern missile barrages.

Concluding his statement, the president emphasized that Russia must end its war against Ukraine 'with dignity' and that diplomacy has the potential to achieve this. These remarks underline the importance of sustained international support and Ukraine's readiness for continued defense amid persistent threats.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense due to the ongoing military actions by Russia, requiring constant monitoring and response to new challenges from Ukrainian authorities. The importance of international backing, particularly in military supplies and air defense, is increasingly evident as the country continues to fight for its independence and territorial integrity.

Ensuring energy security and the resilience of Ukrainian infrastructure also remains a priority under the constant attacks from the aggressor.
