Ukraine Willing to Buy Two Nuclear Reactors from Bulgaria, Says Zelenskyy.
Nuclear Energy: Partnership with Bulgaria
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on March 30 in Kyiv that his country is prepared to move forward with Bulgaria on nuclear energy cooperation, specifically the purchase of two Russian-made nuclear reactors. Speaking at a press conference, he confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to sign a ten-year security cooperation agreement and to continue bilateral collaboration in this sector.
Zelenksyy stated that Ukraine is ready to acquire the reactors.
“We are signaling that we are ready to continue cooperation on power units for nuclear plants,” he emphasized. He added that
“all the infrastructure is already in place.”According to him, 'these two units could benefit both Ukraine and Bulgaria. The decision now rests with the Bulgarian side.'
This potential deal marks a significant step in energy cooperation between the two nations, particularly amid ongoing regional security and energy challenges. For an English-speaking audience, it is worth noting that these reactors were originally intended for Bulgaria’s Belene nuclear project, which was abandoned, making them available for purchase.
Collaboration between Ukraine and Bulgaria in nuclear energy could have a major impact on both countries' energy security. Against the backdrop of shifting global energy markets and the need to diversify energy sources, such an agreement opens new avenues for infrastructure development and stable energy supplies. The role of international partners in supporting these initiatives is also crucial, as it could help enhance security across the region.
