Ukraine’s New Leadership: Koretskyi Takes Over as PM, UK and Sweden Pledge €300 Million.
Ukraine’s New Government Takes Office
According to UATV: On July 16, 2023, Ukraine inaugurated a new administration led by Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi. Within this reshuffled cabinet, Yevhenii Khmara will serve as Acting Minister of Defense. A top priority for the Defense Ministry will be sustaining support for frontline combat brigades, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized, stating:
“The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine will continue all its work in support of combat brigades” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
That same day was marked by significant diplomatic engagements. President Zelenskyy reviewed the situation on the 1,604th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and highlighted backing from international allies. He noted:
“Britain stands with Ukraine. That matters” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy also met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. According to the Ukrainian president, Turkey reaffirmed its readiness to 'do everything possible to organize a leaders-level meeting aimed at ending this war.' On the financial front, Ukraine secured a fresh defense package worth €300 million from the United Kingdom and Sweden—a vital boost to the country’s military capabilities. This context underscores how Kyiv is leveraging both domestic reshuffles and international partnerships to navigate the ongoing conflict.
International Partner Support
Overall, the formation of a government under Serhiy Koretskyi, combined with active international cooperation, signals Ukraine’s sustained efforts to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The launch of Ukraine’s new government and its initial steps reflect the country’s drive to maintain stability and press on with its fight against external aggression. Backing from global partners—particularly the United Kingdom and Turkey—remains a crucial element in this struggle. The infusion of additional defense funding highlights the urgent need to fortify Ukraine’s military strength amid a protracted war.
