President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky intervened in the situation with the detention of boxer Oleksandr Usyk at Krakow airport, which occurred on the evening of September 17, 2024.

"Spoke by phone with Oleksandr Usyk when he was detained. I was outraged by such treatment of our citizen and champion," Zelensky said in his address.

The head of state instructed Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha and Interior Minister of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko to immediately investigate all the details of the incident. Later, the president reported a positive resolution of the situation: "I was just informed that everything is already fine, our champion has been released and no one is detaining him anymore."

Earlier, the arrest of Usyk was reported by Ukrainian MP Zhan Beleniuk, who posted a video of the incident. Later, at 23:31, Beleniuk added: "Seems like everything is ok, Sanya should be released soon. Details, I think, he will share himself. Good night to everyone."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also actively responded to the situation. MFA spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi reported that the Consul General of Ukraine in Krakow went to the airport to clarify the circumstances. "The Ukrainian side categorically does not accept the treatment of its citizen and champion demonstrated in the video," Tykhyi emphasized.

The boxer's wife, Kateryna Usyk, previously commented on the situation, trying to calm the public: "Everything is normal, everything is fine! Nothing criminal. Later Oleksandr will explain everything."

It is worth noting that in May of this year, Usyk became the first in the 21st century to become the undisputed world champion in heavyweight boxing.

At the moment, no official information from the Polish side regarding the reasons for the detention has been received. It is expected that Oleksandr Usyk will comment on the incident himself in the near future.

Earlier, we wrote that Polish journalist Witold Jurasz reported a tense atmosphere during a meeting in Kyiv between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis. According to sources, the Polish side was surprised by the communication style of the Ukrainian president.
