A Russian Sports Star Arrested at the Request of the USA.
A Russian Daniil Kasatkin was arrested in France at Charles de Gaulle Airport. This happened at the request of the American authorities.
According to the investigation, he is suspected of participating in a hacker group that attacked approximately 900 companies, including federal agencies in the USA, from 2020 to 2022, Russian media report.
What is known about the Kasatkin case
The athlete's lawyer, Frédéric Bello, emphasizes that his client bought an old laptop and did not know how to independently install programs — it is likely that his name was used for criminal activities. At the same time, the defense is trying to obtain bail, arguing that imprisonment worsens the athlete's physical condition.
The court in Paris left Kasatkin in custody on July 8. The athlete previously played for the MBA-MAI club in the VTB League. Immediately after the information about the detention appeared, the team's press service announced the termination of cooperation.
The question arises: will there be an extradition to the USA? The next hearings are scheduled for the coming weeks, and, as legal sources note, the progress of the case will depend on the diplomatic agreements between France and the USA.
Following the arrest of Russian athlete Daniil Kasatkin at a French airport on suspicion of hacking activity, an important question remains about the possibility of his extradition to the USA and the further development of the case, which may depend on diplomatic relations between the countries.Read also
