What It Costs to Make a Film in Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian filmmaker Yevhen Taller has shared detailed insights into the expenses involved in producing movies within the country. According to him, the budget for a feature-length film typically falls between €400,000 and €500,000. His previous project, titled 'Love and Bloggers,' came with a price tag of approximately $400,000. Taller pointed out that there is a ceiling on what producers can spend, especially when considering how frequently audiences are turning out for Ukrainian cinema.

Key Expense Categories in Film Production

Script development alone can take anywhere from six months to a full year, marking a crucial phase in the filmmaking process. Once that stage is complete, principal photography runs for 15 to 60 days. A standard work shift for crew members typically lasts around 12 hours. Actor fees per shooting day range from 10,000 to 40,000 Ukrainian hryvnias, which significantly impacts the overall production budget.

Taller emphasized that financial resources for film productions in Ukraine are limited, requiring careful budgeting and strict financial oversight.

In today’s film industry landscape, striking a balance between production quality and audience affordability is essential for Ukrainian cinema to grow and draw in a larger viewership.

Production costs in Ukraine remain relatively high, presenting ongoing challenges for filmmakers operating under tight financial constraints. Adapting to current market conditions means that Ukrainian movies must not only maintain their quality but also remain accessible to a broader audience—a key factor for the sector's continued development. The state of Ukrainian cinema reflects broader industry trends, where elevated expenses often pose significant hurdles for new projects and creative ideas.
