Russian command continues to relocate troops from less prioritized areas of the front in Ukraine to Kursk Oblast in order to counter the Ukrainian counteroffensive. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this is confirmed by Vladimir Putin's meeting with the army leadership and reports from several brigade commanders who have either already been transferred or are likely to be transferred to Kursk Oblast. This was reported in the ISW report.

Among these units:

  • The 810th and 155th Marine Infantry Brigades are likely to have been moved from the north of Kharkiv Oblast.
  • The 11th Airborne Assault Brigade is likely to have been relocated from the Chasiv Yar area.
  • The 56th Airborne Assault Regiment has been moved from the Robotine area in the west of Zaporizhia Oblast.
  • The 51st Airborne Assault Regiment is also likely to have been redeployed to Kursk Oblast, although there is no direct evidence of this yet.

"The Russian military command is resisting operational pressure to move forces from priority offensive operations to capture Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast. It is likely to continue relocating forces from less prioritized offensive operations in other parts of the front to defend Kursk Oblast," the report says.

These relocations indicate that the Russian command is forced to respond to the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kursk Oblast, even if it weakens other areas of the front. According to the ISW, Russia will continue to move forces from less prioritized directions to preserve defense in Kursk Oblast, even if it has a negative impact on their offensive operations, including attempts to capture Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast.

It is worth noting that President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian troops' advance into Kursk Oblast was a "preventive strike" that allowed them to avoid the encirclement of Ukrainian units and the occupation of the city of Sumy.

According to CNN, the Ukrainian advance in Kursk Oblast revealed many vulnerabilities in the Russian army. Moreover, it is a signal to Kyiv's allies that Ukraine can change the course of the war.

By the way, President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a number of laws related to the military, including the status of Ukrainian fighters who are on the territory of Russia.
