The Russian command continues to move troops from less priority sections of the front in Ukraine to the Kursk region to counter the Ukrainian counteroffensive. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this is confirmed by Vladimir Putin's meeting with the army command and reports from several brigade commanders who have either already been redeployed or are likely to be redeployed to the Kursk region. This is reported in the Institute for the Study of War report.

Among these units:

  • The 810th and 155th Marine Brigades, likely redeployed from the north of the Kharkiv region.
  • The 11th Airborne Brigade, likely redeployed from the Chasiv Yar area.
  • The 56th Airborne Regiment redeployed from the Robotyne area in the west of the Zaporizhzhia region.
  • The 51st Airborne Regiment, likely also redeployed to the Kursk region, although there is no direct evidence of this yet.

“The Russian military command is facing operational pressure to move forces from priority offensive operations in capturing Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. It is likely to continue moving forces from less priority offensive operations in other parts of the front for defense in the Kursk region,” the report notes.

These movements indicate that the Russian command is forced to respond to the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the Kursk region, even if this results in weakening other sections of the front. According to ISW, Russia will continue to move forces from less priority directions to maintain defense in the Kursk region, even if this negatively impacts their offensive operations, including attempts to capture Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.

It should be noted that President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the advance of Ukrainian troops into the Kursk region of Russia was a "preemptive strike" that prevented the encirclement of Ukrainian units and the occupation of the city of Sumy.

According to CNN, the advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces into the Kursk region has shown, in particular, many vulnerabilities in the Russian army. Additionally, it is a signal to Kyiv’s allies that Ukraine can change the course of the war.

By the way, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a number of laws concerning the military, including the status of Ukrainian fighters in Russia.
