Border guard sentenced for smuggling evaders: what punishment was imposed by the court.

In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, a border guard was tried for illegally smuggling three men across the border. He received a punishment for his actions, but it was somewhat modified.

Case details

According to the materials of the case, a soldier of the State Border Guard Service helped smuggle one resident of Prykarpattia and two residents of Bila Tserkva to Romania in the fall of 2024. After being detained by the border guards, he explained that he acted on the information of an acquaintance living in Poland and did not receive money for the assistance.

The soldier stated that he was exploring a route for a possible future escape, and did not intend to cross the border himself. However, a month later, he was caught attempting to illegally enter Romania.

Court decision

The judge of the Verkhovyna District Court found the soldier of the State Border Guard Service guilty of illegal smuggling across the border. The punishment was five years of imprisonment, but it was replaced with two years of conditional imprisonment. The verdict can be appealed in court.

It was recently reported about a fine for a woman from Transcarpathia for participating in a group that smuggled military conscripts to Romania across the border. Also, in the Vinnytsia region, a man, denied service, was recognized as an evader and sentenced to three years in prison.

It all started with the arrest of the border guard in the Ivano-Frankivsk region for illegal smuggling across the border. The court decided to replace his punishment with a conditional term, but the case will certainly draw attention to the issues of border control and the fight against illegal migration actions.
