Birthday of the Mailbox
To celebrate this event, the date of the appearance of the first mailboxes on the streets of London was established. This happened on August 2, 1858. But this construction was known more than three centuries before this date.
In 1500, Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias, heading to South Africa, got caught in a severe storm, resulting in his death. The officer who survived decided to describe this event to inform about the disappearance of the expedition members in case the rest of the travelers did not return home. He put a letter in a boot, which he hung on a tree.
A year later, navigator Joao da Nova found this message and built a chapel at the same place. The locals used the boot for correspondence for a long time. Now there is a monument in the form of a large boot to honor one of the first postal constructions.
During the time when European sailors traveled to India, they left messages at the Cape of Good Hope in a stone box, and the ships returning to Europe picked them up.
