Expedition Outcomes: What Was Discovered

According to Espreso.tv: A four-day search expedition has wrapped up, uncovering isolated artifacts but failing to locate a mass grave. The investigation involved both Ukrainian and Polish experts, including the organization 'Specialized Institution 'Volyn Antiquities'' and researchers from the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin.

During the mission, around 50 exploratory trenches were dug. The search efforts yielded the following items:

  • pieces of a wooden coffin
  • buttons
  • possible fragments of footwear

No mass burial site was discovered. Earlier exhumation work took place from April 23 to May 5, 2025, during which the remains of 42 individuals were recovered.

Historical Background

In February 1945, the village of Puzhnyky was burned to the ground; before World War II, 98% of its population was Polish. The search investigations in the village of Huta Pyniatska concluded on June 19. These efforts are crucial for understanding the region's history and honoring those who perished in tragic events.

Against the backdrop of historical events in this area during World War II, the expedition's results underscore the need for continued research that could illuminate dark chapters of the past. The recovered fragments may serve as significant artifacts for scholars studying Polish-Ukrainian relations and the impact of wartime conflicts. Further studies could also help commemorate victims and foster interethnic dialogue in a region marked by numerous tragedies.
