The War in Ukraine Will Dwindle by 2026: When to Expect a Peace Agreement

According to ТСН: The year 2026, according to forecasts, will become a period of gradual 'dwindling' of the war, although achieving a full-fledged peace agreement does not seem realistic at the moment.

This was stated by Ukrainian journalist and publicist Vitaly Portnikov on the Espreso program.

'The level of chaos in which the world finds itself today makes any attempts to create a realistic political calendar extremely problematic,' he noted.

At the same time, Portnikov is confident that Russia will not succeed in achieving a strategic breakthrough.

'The United States, despite Donald Trump's personal sympathies for the Russian president, will have to maintain pressure on Moscow. European countries, despite fatigue from the war, will continue to seek new resources to support Ukraine. Ukraine, despite its genuine desire to exit the conflict, will have to continue fighting for survival in extremely difficult conditions.'

Portnikov also added that both declarative diplomatic initiatives and non-public contacts will continue:

'As both sides become exhausted, the need for a pause and a reduction in the intensity of hostilities without formalizing such steps will become increasingly acute.'

'Ceasefire, even in localized forms, will occur not so much due to agreements but out of practical necessity. If events develop according to this dwindling scenario, the reduction in the intensity of the war may continue into 2027. In that case, conditions for signing a full-fledged peace agreement may gradually form either before Donald Trump's presidential term ends or with the participation of a new U.S. president in 2029,' he predicts.

It is worth noting that earlier The Times reported that the 1418th day of the war, which lasted the length of the German-Soviet war, could become a turning point for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Vitaly Portnikov's statements highlight the complexity of the current international situation and the unpredictability of developments in the context of the war in Ukraine. And although peace agreements are not yet on the horizon, a reduction in the intensity of the conflict may create certain conditions for dialogue in the future.
