International Friendship Day

Today, July 30, is celebrated as International Friendship Day. The UN General Assembly proclaimed this day in April 2011.

The idea of the holiday originated in 1958 and belongs to Dr. Artemio Bracho, who proposed celebrating Friendship Day during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay.

Sincere friendly relationships are always based on personal affection, mutual respect, and shared views on important issues. It's impossible to imagine life without friends – without support in difficult times, shared joy, understanding, and pleasant communication. But friendship is important not only for individuals – on a global scale, it can unite entire communities and nations, thus promoting understanding between them.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

Every year on July 30, the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed. This phenomenon is a form of modern slavery that violates human rights.

Human trafficking – is not only sexual exploitation or cases related to abduction. Many affected Ukrainians have been under labor exploitation or were drawn into criminal activities.

The aim of the event is to draw attention and raise awareness of humanity regarding this acute problem, engaging the authorities in countering human trafficking.

World Embroidery Day

This unofficial holiday was initiated by the Swedish organization «Broderiakademin, BRAK» in 2011.

Embroidery – is an ancient handicraft folk art that involves decorating a particular material (tulle, leather, canvas, gauze, etc.) with various patterns. The development of embroidery began as early as the first millennium BCE. Embroidery contains information about faith, rituals, customs, culture of the people.

What religious holiday is today

On July 30 in the church calendar – the day of remembrance of the holy apostles Silas, Silvanus, Andronicus, and others.

Saint Silas was one of the leading members of the early Christian church and a companion of the apostle Paul. He was chosen by Paul for a missionary journey after the separation of Paul and Barnabas. They traveled to Asia Minor and Europe, preaching the Gospel and founding churches. Silas and Paul were imprisoned in Philippi, where they were miraculously freed after an earthquake. He is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as an important leader of the early church and a participant in the Jerusalem Council.

Saint Silvanus was another close associate of the apostle Paul. Silvanus is mentioned in the Epistles of Paul and Peter as a faithful assistant and messenger. He actively preached the Gospel with Paul and Peter and played an important role in establishing Christian communities.

Saint Andronicus is mentioned in the New Testament as one of the distinguished Christian leaders, particularly in the Epistle to the Romans as a relative of Paul and a notable apostle who believed before Paul.
