According to ТСН: Tomorrow, December 31, in the Orthodox calendar is the day of remembrance of Saint Melania the Blessed. Saint Melania was born around 383 in Rome, into a wealthy senatorial family. She was the granddaughter of Saint Melania the Elder, a nun who greatly influenced her spiritual development.

Since childhood, Melania exhibited deep faith, a love for the Holy Scriptures, and a desire for a pure life. Although she dreamed of serving God, at the age of 14 she married a noble young man named Pinian.

The couple owned large estates in Italy, Africa, Gaul, Spain, and the East, allowing them to live in luxury; however, over time her heart yearned for an ascetic life.

After losing two children at a young age, Melania chose a new spiritual path and decided to dedicate her life to Christ, along with her husband choosing a path of prayer and service to others.

The couple began unprecedented acts of charity, their donations were so grand that contemporary witnesses called Melania 'the treasury of the Church's mercy'. After political unrest in Rome, they traveled to the Holy Land, where Melania established a women's monastery on the Mount of Olives and became the abbess.

After the death of Pinian, Melania further deepened her monastic life. She was well-educated, knew the Holy Scriptures, corresponded with prominent Church Fathers, and supported Orthodox teaching during theological disputes. Saint Melania the Blessed died on December 31, 439 in Jerusalem at about 56 years of age; according to legend, her death was peaceful, filled with prayer and spiritual joy.
