History of the Stadium
The Vicente Calderón stadium served as the home ground for Atlético Madrid for 50 years and was opened in 1966.
The club achieved many successes in its old stadium before moving to a new one eight years ago.
Here, it secured six La Liga titles and seven King's Cups during its stay.
However, the Madrid giants moved to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
Vicente Calderón was known for its unique design beneath which a motorway flowed.
The stadium was demolished shortly after its closure, and this process lasted about one and a half years.
After Atlético moved to Wanda Metropolitano, the old stadium was converted into a public park named after the club.
The Park Atlético de Madrid is now filled with trees and features a 700-meter-long path for recreational athletes.
The history of the stadium is preserved for Atlético fans by a carved stone featuring an image of a football at the center line and an underground time capsule.
There is also a memorial plaque with an image of the legendary stadium and the inscription '1966-2017'.
