Olympic Champion Beleniuk Fires Sharp Criticism at IOC Over Russian Athlete Decision.
Zhan Beleniuk Speaks Out on IOC's Controversial Move
According to Espreso.tv: Zhan Beleniuk, Ukraine's Olympic gold medalist and a sitting member of parliament, has strongly condemned the International Olympic Committee's decision to allow Russian athletes back into competition. He argues the move is fundamentally flawed and stresses that sportspeople should not be held accountable for the actions of their political leaders.
Beleniuk, who also serves as deputy head of the parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports, described the IOC's policy as misguided. He specifically criticized the July 7, 2023, decision to temporarily lift restrictions on Russia's Olympic Committee—restrictions that had been in place since October 2023. In his view, this reversal undermines the core values of sport and raises serious questions about fairness.
“This is a probing of the ground to later, closer to the qualifying events, give Russian athletes the chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.” - Zhan Beleniuk
Fallout Within the Sports Community
The IOC's decision to reintegrate Russian athletes into international events has sparked widespread backlash, particularly among Ukrainian sports figures and officials. The issue carries heavy political and social weight, as tensions between Ukraine and Russia remain extremely high. Beleniuk's comments reflect a broader anxiety across the sporting world about what this decision means for the integrity and fairness of international competition.
