Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld: Legends of Darts Predicted to Decline in Their Careers.
Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld's Struggles
According to The Sun: Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld have been warned that their best days may be behind them.
The sniper expert 'Snakebite' has had a tough season, and there is a real threat that he will finish the year without trophies for the first time since 2011.
PA GettyThe last serious success for the 16th-ranked Wright came at the 2023 European Championship, while he has not claimed a title at the Players Championship in the last three years.
Former professional Vincent van der Voort believes age has finally caught up with Wright, hindering him from delivering consistently high-level performances. He emphasized:
“I don't believe he can return to a high level week in and week out. He might win another title, but breaking into the top 5 in the world? No, I no longer believe in that. Age is a merciless adversary.”
Analyst Damian Flottes supported this view, highlighting that legends cannot always live up to their past achievements. He noted:
“The same applies to van Barneveld. To young fans, he is currently just a player who often loses. But we know him as one of the greatest champions of all time, and that comparison is hard to accept.”
Five-time world champion van Barneveld last reached a significant semifinal in 2022 at the Grand Slam, and has not made it to the quarter-finals at Ally Pally in seven years.
The Danish player was knocked out in the first round of the World Matchplay in July, losing 10-6 to Michael van Gerwen, with an average score of only 87.10 at the Winter Gardens.
Van Barneveld managed to reach only one quarter-final in ProTour out of 36 tournaments he participated in this year.

He explained:
“After only the second throw, he already grimaced. This is very early in the match to look so dissatisfied. I had hoped that after a month off in August he would return with renewed energy, but nothing substantial has changed. With that attitude, it's real torture.”
The situation of both players emphasizes the difficulties even dart legends face, as time spares no one. It creates new challenges, especially in the context of competitions that are becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of new talented players. The true last word is left for the future, as everything can change with the upcoming tournaments.
