Aidan O'Brien Breaks His Record: 28 Group Wins in a Year.
Aidan O'Brien's Charm in Modern Sports
According to The Sun: The world once was a better place, wasn't it?
Remember how a few years ago our notions of eccentricity revolved around watching celebrities try to eat a spoonful of cinnamon? That remains one of the most memorable moments of our time.
Aidan O'Brien aims to surpass his own record of 28 wins in group competitions in a year PAOn this occasion, let’s congratulate everyone who remembers when Mike Parry attempted to consume a large amount of cinnamon – it nearly ended in disaster. The video has become a classic.
The world today is filled with anger and noise, but there are those who strive to maintain their dignity in this chaotic era. One such example is the great Aidan O'Brien, renowned not only for his wins but also for remembering all his staff when celebrating successes.
In the world of horse racing, many leading trainers face their own ego issues. When your clients are billionaires and members of royal families, it can take its toll. But Aidan fortunately proves that you don’t have to be arrogant despite your immense success. I hope he can surpass his own record of group wins in a year.
Paths to the Record
As of now in 2025, Aidan has already achieved 22 group wins, including a win by Precise in yesterday's Fillies' Mile. In 2017, he set a record with 28 wins, surpassing the legendary trainer Bobby Frankel with his 25 wins.
In my opinion, over the next few months he has 20 possible group competitions he can target in Britain, France, Germany, America, and Hong Kong, and he needs to win seven of them.
This will not be easy but if he can catch up to the record by early December, he might try his luck at the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini Internacional in Argentina for a final triumph.
Having the support of Coolmore and incredible horses at Ballydoyle this year is undoubtedly a big advantage. But as experience shows, having the best equipment is only half the battle. Many trainers have had excellent horses but failed to achieve success.
Aidan has long proven his genius. One of the latest examples is the win of Puerto Rico in the Group 1 Jean-Luc Lagardere last week. This horse needed six races to win for the first time, but Aidan worked hard with him, and he eventually flourished.
This reminds me of the story of US Navy Flag, who ran 11 times at the age of two. Initially, he wasn’t particularly notable, but he ended the season with wins at Middle Park-Dewhurst in record 2017.
I believe that another trainer simply would not have achieved such results.
For some fans, it might be unusual to mention Aidan's name alongside the legendary Vincent O'Brien, but I am confident he is equally as good.
I hope he surpasses his record - the countdown has begun.
