Estonia Loses 2027 European Shooting Championships Over Refusal to Admit Russian and Belarusian Athletes.
Relocation of the European Airgun Shooting Championships
According to Espreso.tv: Estonia has been stripped of the right to host the 2027 European Airgun Shooting Championships after declining to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to enter the country. Originally scheduled for Tallinn, the event will now take place in Granada, Spain, from March 3 to 9, 2027. This championship serves as a qualifier for both the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2027 European Games, making it a critical competition on the international shooting calendar.
Estonia was awarded the hosting rights back in 2023, and Tallinn had previously hosted the tournament three times—in 1998, 2005, and 2023. However, as Estonian official Vahur Karus explained,
“Estonia cannot allow entry to citizens of Russia or Belarus. This is a matter of state policy.”
Impact of the Relocation on International Competitions
It is worth noting that on July 7, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) temporarily lifted restrictions regarding the Russian Olympic Committee, but this did not alter Estonia’s stance. As a result, Granada becomes the new venue for one of the key events in airgun shooting, which draws participants from numerous countries.
The move to Granada highlights ongoing tensions and political divisions in sports, particularly concerning the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes. This decision may also affect competitors from other nations who align with Estonia’s position, potentially leading to further shifts in the landscape of international competitions.
As a qualifying stage for the Olympics, this championship will significantly influence the future of athletes aiming to represent their countries on the global stage.
