The Ministry of Defense explained how to properly return from unauthorized absence from a military unit

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine published a detailed instruction on how to properly return from unauthorized absence (AWOL). The instruction can be found on the Ministry of Defense's page on social media Facebook.

According to the instructions, the following steps must be taken:

  • Submit a report to Army+ about returning to service after AWOL.
  • Arrive at the nearest Military Service Points (MSP) within 24 hours.
  • Receive on-site consultation and safely reach the reserve battalion.
  • Resume service within 72 hours and receive social guarantees and monetary payments.
  • Submit a new report to Army+ for a change of service location and add a recommendation letter from the desired unit.
  • Receive approval within 72 hours and prepare for relocation to a new unit.

It is worth noting that this procedure is available until March 1 only for military personnel who were AWOL until November 29, 2024.

Also, Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Head of the President's Office, noted that most cases of unauthorized absence from military units occur not at the front but in training centers. However, some cases do concern combat units.

It should be noted that military personnel who have taken unauthorized absence after November 29, 2024, cannot return to service without avoiding criminal liability.

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada passed law No. 12095, which allows voluntary return to service for those servicemen who have deserted or have first taken unauthorized absence from military units. The law provides for the continuation of military service for such individuals during the state of war, provided that they arrive at their place of service and express willingness to continue service.
