According to ТСН: In Ukraine, the process of withdrawing 10 kopeck coins has started, which is planned to be completed by October 1, 2025. Earlier, coins of 1, 2, 5, and 25 kopecks have already been withdrawn from circulation. Although these coins remain legal tender, they will no longer return to circulation after being received by banks.

Banknotes have a limited lifespan. Paper banknotes serve on average for 2–5 years, depending on the quality of the material and the intensity of use. Coins, although they last longer, also lose the clarity of their images over time and become less convenient for transactions.

Due to rising prices of various goods and services, small coins and banknotes lose their purchasing power, making them less convenient for the population.

The National Bank of Ukraine regularly updates banknotes and coins by withdrawing old denominations from circulation.

Which banknotes have been withdrawn from circulation in Ukraine:

  • all banknotes issued before 2003;

  • banknotes of 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias of the old design are replaced by coins;

  • banknotes of 100, 200, and 500 hryvnias of the 2003–2006 sample are being withdrawn and replaced with new ones, with improved protection.

Which kopecks are no longer in circulation in Ukraine: coins of 1, 2, 5, and 25 kopecks have been withdrawn from circulation, and the old models of 1 and 2 hryvnias are gradually being replaced with new ones.

Furthermore, the Verkhovna Rada supported in the first reading bill No. 14093, which proposes renaming the change coin of Ukraine. Instead of the term “kopeck,” it is proposed to introduce “shag.”

Thus, the process of updating the monetary system in Ukraine continues, and the withdrawal of small coins is part of this strategy. The introduction of new terms for coins may also influence the perception of currency circulation among the population. Changes are typically accompanied by societal adaptation, so it will be interesting to observe how these innovations will affect economic relations in the country.
