Sharks are increasingly attacking people – scientists.

The number of unprovoked shark attacks on people is increasing, according to the International Shark Attack File. According to statistics, if in the 1990s, 500 attacks were registered, then from 2010 to 2019, the number of such cases exceeded 800. In 2023, 69 attacks were already recorded, which is 6 more than the average figure for the previous five years. As a result of these incidents, 10 people died, reports Bild.
The latest fatal attack occurred on September 17 in the Canary Islands, where a shark attacked a German tourist and caused her death from sustained injuries. Attacks by these predators are becoming more common in other popular tourist destinations as well.
Experts cite several reasons for this growth. Firstly, due to social networks, a lot of such cases have become known, which was not the case before. Secondly, the number of tourists vacationing in marine regions is increasing. However, scientists have not noticed any changes in shark behavior: they have not become more aggressive or hungry than before.
This statistic worries scientists and tourists, but experts emphasize that the likelihood of a shark attack remains very low compared to other risks that may lurk in the water.
