According to his wife Martha, the cause of death was throat cancer, which was diagnosed back in 1987.

Career and Achievements

Alex Wallow served as a boxing analyst on ABC from 1986 until the channel's closure in June 2000, interacting with stars like Mike Tyson.

He was first diagnosed with stage four throat cancer, which later spread to his tongue. But that didn't stop his career: Wallow returned to commentary less than six months after multiple surgeries.

Wallow became known for exposing potential corruption at the 1977 tournament organized by controversial promoter Don King.

He felt it was his duty to check the qualifications of 56 boxers, of whom 31 proved to be unprepared. During this process, he was offered bribes to confirm the legitimacy of the tournament.

Alex reported his findings to management, and ABC withdrew from the fraudulent event.

Tributes and Memories

Wallow's passing led to numerous posts on social media, including from Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler and HBO commentator Jim Lampley.

“Boxing lost a brave man with the passing of former commentator Alex Wallow, a dear friend to many in the business,” wrote Trampler.
“Alex faced threats due to exposing fraud at Don King's tournament, was the mind behind Howard Cosell and later president of ABC TV under Bob Iger. He deserves a place in the Hall of Fame,” added Trampler.
“Alex Wallow was a fighter, like any boxer I ever covered, thanks to the knowledge he generously shared with me,” noted Lampley.
“His indomitable fight against throat cancer in the 1990s was beyond brave. The fact that he lived for another thirty years is an example of epic courage,” he added.

“I am struck by his passing, but eternally grateful that he was here. My condolences to all his friends and family,” Lampley concluded.
