The Telegraph analysts explained why North Korea sent troops to Ukraine.
The involvement of military personnel from North Korea could significantly strengthen Russia's position, which is incurring losses in Ukraine. However, the true beneficiary of this agreement is North Korea. The newspaper The Telegraph highlighted six reasons why Pyongyang intervened in the European conflict.
Initially, Kim Jong-un supplied Putin with ammunition. But the dispatch of thousands of troops marked a turning point, indicating significant shifts in the balance of power. The publication notes that the alliance between Russia and North Korea will impact global security, but the extent of this impact depends on the assistance Moscow provides to Pyongyang in return.
Six reasons for North Korea's intervention in the European conflict:
- Financial gain. Kim Jong-un needs foreign currency to support his regime. North Korea is already sending civilian workers to Russia to earn money, and now it has sent military personnel.
- International recognition. Kim seeks to be recognized as the leader of a significant state, rather than just a local dictator. Participation in the European conflict makes him a player on the global political stage.
- Gaining combat experience. The North Korean army lacks sufficient practice in modern combat technologies. Participation in the war in Ukraine will allow them to gain experience with drones, electronic warfare, missiles, and armored vehicles, which will be valuable in their confrontation with South Korea.
- Army modernization. The North Korean Armed Forces are technically outdated. By sending his military, Kim may demand Russia's assistance in modernizing ground forces.
- Acquisition of strategic technologies. Kim aims to obtain advanced space and submarine technologies, including long-range missiles capable of reaching the United States.
- Security guarantees. Kim might forge a military alliance with Russia to secure Kremlin support in the event of a threat to his regime, such as a war with South Korea.
President Zelensky addressed the nation, discussing the consequences of Russian strikes and thanking the rescuers, noting that Moscow is inclined to continue its aggression, which prompted North Korea's alliance with Russia.
According to intelligence data, by October 27-28, the first military personnel from North Korea will be deployed by Russia in combat operations.
South Korea's intelligence service claims that North Korea has sent about 3,000 troops to Russia to support Russian occupiers in Ukraine.
North Korea's military reserves allow it to conduct combat operations for three months, and factories in the country are operating at full capacity to supply armored vehicles to Russia.
