News on the coaching position at Nottingham Forest

According to The Sun: Angé Postecoglou could become the new coach of Nottingham Forest following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo on Monday evening.

Nuno was the first Premier League manager to be dismissed this season, after club owner Evangelos Marinakis made this decision only after three games.

According to The Telegraph, Marinakis has made former Tottenham coach Angé Postecoglou the main candidate for the Nottingham Forest coaching position.

Postecoglou, who was dismissed by Tottenham in the summer despite a 17-year wait for a title, could lead the team in their game against Arsenal on Saturday.

Reports suggest that an agreement is close, as Marinakis wants his team to play offensively, for which Postecoglou became known during his time in London.

The Australian, born in Greece but raised in Melbourne, gained recognition and criticism for his attacking playing style in North London.

In contrast, Nuno had a successful season at Nottingham Forest by playing a defensive style with counter-attacks.

Espírito Santo, who previously managed Tottenham, took the club to their highest league position in 30 years and helped qualify for European competitions.

However, this summer his relationships with Marinakis and new global football chief Edu Gaspar have deteriorated significantly.

Nuno, 51 years old, signed a new three-year contract on June 21.

However, he admitted a month later that his relationship with Marinakis was 'not good' during an emotional press conference.

He commented on the rumors about the danger of losing his job: “There is no smoke without fire – I understand how this works.”

Nuno added: “I always had a very good relationship with the owner – last season we were very close and spoke daily. “This season, it hasn't been as good, but I still believe that communication is important, as my concerns about the squad and the season ahead persist. Our relationships have changed, and we are not as close now.”

It is believed that the problems in relationships began after a conflict between Nuno and Edu, the former technical director of Arsenal, who joined the club this summer.

However, the cracks began to show back in May, when Marinakis came onto the field to express his dissatisfaction with Nuno after the 2-2 draw against Leicester, which affected their chances for the Champions League.

The first three games of Nottingham Forest this season have been mixed: an initial struggle to win against Brentford and a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

But the 0-3 defeat at home to West Ham seemed to be the last straw for Nuno.

In a club statement released in the evening, it was stated: “Nottingham Forest confirms that Nuno Espírito Santo has been dismissed from his position as head coach today due to recent circumstances.”

“The club thanks Nuno for his contribution to a very successful era at The City Ground, particularly for his role in the 2024/25 season, which will always be mentioned in the history of the club.”
