Ryder Cup T-Shirt Featuring Europe's Player Silhouette: Controversy Arises Over US Merchandise.
Controversy Over Team USA T-Shirt at Ryder Cup
According to The Sun: American golf fans were outraged after learning that the Team USA shirt for the Ryder Cup features the silhouette of a European player.
The shirt, released by Ralph Lauren, was sold in the official US Ryder Cup store for $65 (48 pounds).
US Ryder CupThe design clearly showcases Team USA branding above the outline of a player in a post-swing stance.
However, fans noticed that the silhouette does not belong to any Team USA representative or any other American player.
One Twitter user wrote: “That’s just Rory McIlroy on the USA Ryder Cup shirt, are you kidding?”
Another fan expressed their outrage: “The PGA and Ryder Cup need new ideas and leadership... this is just laziness and unacceptable!!!”
Rory McIlroy, the golf legend from Northern Ireland, not only does not play for Team USA but will also be competing against them in the prestigious tournament in the US later this month.
McIlroy, who currently ranks second in the world, will be playing for Team Europe, having successfully qualified due to his excellent performances this year.
GettyOne furious fan commented: “We urgently need to take Ralph Lauren out of golf. Hit the off button immediately.”
When placed side by side, the resemblance becomes substantial.
Another fan emphasized: “They can’t be that stupid. The Europeans will love this.”
Some supporters didn’t see McIlroy in the silhouette at all, but couldn’t agree on who it actually was.
Several other users expressed varying opinions, including: “That’s obviously [Jordan] Spieth”, “I’d say ‘Adam Scott’, just ‘Scottie Scheffler!’”
One name stood out among all, and McIlroy himself shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding the shirt. He told Sky Sports:
“It looks more like Adam Scott than me, but yeah, it’s a bit similar, I don’t know.”
When informed that American fans might wear his image on their shirts at the tournament, he jokingly replied: “That’s fine. It won’t bother me!”
Team USA and Ralph Lauren had plenty of opportunities to create a t-shirt featuring Ryder Cup stars.
World number one Scheffler is joined by icons like Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, and Justin Thomas.
They will compete against a team that includes McIlroy, British players Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, as well as former world number one Jon Rahm.
The tournament is set to take place from September 26 to 28 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
