Arsenal signs Piero Hincapié: deal details for £45 million.
Arsenal agrees deal with Bayer Leverkusen
According to The Sun: Arsenal Football Club has reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of defender Piero Hincapié.
Arsenal is loaning the 23-year-old Ecuadorian for one season with the option to buy for £45 million.
GettyIf Arsenal exercises this option, Hincapié will sign a five-year contract, which will also include a 10% sell-on clause.
The 46-time international from Ecuador is expected to travel to North London on Saturday for a medical examination.
Big spending on transfers
This transfer will be the next step in Mikel Arteta's significant spending, having already invested over £200 million in players such as Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyökeres, and Eberechi Eze.
The competition for Hincapié's signature has also increased due to interest from London rivals, particularly Chelsea.
Hincapié has already played over 150 matches for Bayer Leverkusen, despite his young age.
The versatile defender most often plays centrally but can also operate on the flanks, providing Arteta with additional flexibility in defense.
This transfer aligns with the sale of Jakub Kiwior to Portuguese club Porto for £23 million.
Defender Oleksandr Zinchenko is also expected to leave the club, with negotiations ongoing with Marseille.
Strengthening Arsenal's defense
Signing Hincapié will help Arteta better organize rotation in defense, as the club has ambitious goals for winning the Premier League title.
In recent seasons, Arsenal has faced depth issues due to injuries to key players that occurred while fighting for the title last year.
This season has also started with injuries for Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka, while Kai Havertz recently underwent knee surgery.
Thus, new acquisitions allow Arsenal to strengthen their squad and increase the team's chances of success in upcoming matches.
