Overnight Drone Strike Damages Five Homes and a Dormitory in Odesa, One Injured.
A Night of Explosions
According to Novyny.live: On the night of July 6, Russian forces launched a drone attack on Odesa, striking multiple civilian sites. The assault left a 23-year-old man wounded. Preliminary reports indicate damage to five private houses and a dormitory. The city's tram tracks also suffered significant damage, though rail service has since been restored.
So far, 26 claims for housing compensation have been filed. Oleksandr Akhmerov, a spokesperson for the emergency operations center, stated:
'As of seven in the morning, five private homes and a dormitory were damaged. The tram lines were also hit, but traffic has already resumed. We have received 26 applications for compensation for damaged housing. Work is ongoing, and emergency teams are still accepting residents' reports.'
Eyewitnesses recounted terrifying moments. Oleksandr shared: 'My wife, daughter, and I were celebrating a birthday. We heard the air raid siren and the drone. We managed to get inside the house. Everyone is alive, and that's what matters most. Of course, we were terrified. But people are helping us—we will hold on.' Another witness, Nelya, added: 'I heard the drone's sound. It got louder and louder, then an explosion went off between the houses, in the garages. Glass and debris flew everywhere. A piece of shrapnel pierced a neighbor's air conditioner; others had their doors and furniture hit. The garages caught fire, and we heard more blasts. After the strike, ambulances and firefighters arrived, and soon after, officials began documenting the damage. Now we are cleaning up what is left.'
Escalation of Violence
This attack marks a continued escalation of violence in the region. Just on July 1, Russian forces launched a ballistic missile strike on the Odesa area, killing two people and injuring 13. On June 20, a civilian gas station in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district was hit. These incidents highlight that civilian infrastructure remains under threat, and local residents continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing military actions.
The assault on Odesa underscores the growing danger to civilians amid the protracted conflict. Given previous shelling, the situation in the region remains tense, with local communities facing constant challenges related to safety and rebuilding. Providing aid to victims and restoring essential infrastructure is critical to ensuring stability and security in this area.
