Mike Powell has been banned from coaching
According to The Sun: Famous long jumper and former world record holder Mike Powell has been banned from coaching due to safety concerns. This was reported today by the Athletic Inspection.
61-year-old Powell, who is currently a coach at Azusa Pacific University in California, is a two-time Olympic silver medalist.
GettyPowell set a world record in long jump, reaching 8.95 meters at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. He is now barred from participating in all events governed by World Athletics.
This restriction means he cannot obtain accreditation for any competitions organized by World Athletics or other associations.
Additionally, Powell cannot attend guest or private events related to the World Athletics series, even if invited by the organizers.
It was noted that the decision to ban can be reviewed based on a submitted statement or appeal.
In addition to coaching, Powell has worked as an analyst after his career ended. He also shares his expert insights in communication with Yahoo Sports.
Sports achievements have become a family tradition for Powell: his daughter Mika, 30, became a gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, winning a medal in the women’s 4x400m relay three years ago in Birmingham. Mika's mother, Rosie Edeh, also has sports achievements, participating in the hurdles at the 1996 Olympic Games.
Mike Powell's ban from coaching underscores the importance of adhering to safety standards in sports. Amid growing attention to athlete accountability, this decision raises interest in how events will unfold regarding his career and potential return to the sport.
