Austrian Researchers Unveil Transformer-Like Solar Panel That Boosts Energy Output by 40%.
The FLAPTrack Solar Panel: A New Approach to Energy Harvesting
According to ITC.ua — Техно: Engineers at Graz University of Technology have developed an advanced solar panel system called FLAPTrack (Face-to-Face Lay-Down Anti-Degradation Protection). Unlike traditional fixed panels, this system automatically adjusts the angle of its photovoltaic modules to follow the sun's movement across the sky. It can also fold the panels into a protective position when dangerous weather approaches. Project lead Armin Buchroithner noted that the core innovation is a patented linear drive mechanism that handles two critical tasks: tracking the sun and securing the panels in a safe, folded state.
Performance Gains and Practical Benefits
A 1.8 kW demonstration unit has been installed on the roof of an office building at Graz University of Technology. Compared to stationary solar modules, FLAPTrack delivers an average 40% increase in electricity generation. On certain days, that boost can reach as high as 56%. The system also produces more than double the electricity during non-peak sunlight hours.
This breakthrough could significantly improve the efficiency of solar energy systems, which is crucial for advancing green technology and sustainable development. By protecting panels from damage while optimizing their output based on natural conditions, FLAPTrack represents a meaningful step forward in renewable energy. Its design may encourage further innovation in the solar power sector, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions.
