Azerbaijan Files Formal Protest with Russia Over Drone Strike on SOCAR Facilities.
Drone Attack Targets SOCAR in Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: A diplomatic confrontation unfolded after a drone struck a SOCAR gas station in Ukraine's Mykolaiv region on July 5. Azerbaijani officials summoned a Russian diplomat to formally lodge a protest against military strikes on the company's assets within Ukraine. SOCAR, the state-owned oil and gas company of Azerbaijan, operates a network of fuel stations and energy infrastructure across Ukraine.
During the meeting, Azerbaijan handed over a protest note that referenced not only the latest incident but also previous attacks on SOCAR facilities in Ukraine. Specifically, a gas distribution compressor station and an oil depot in Odesa had already been hit in earlier military actions. These assaults have caused significant material damage to the company and led to injuries among its employees.
Threat to Foreign Investment Security
Beyond the direct strikes on SOCAR, airstrikes have also damaged the Azerbaijani embassy building in Kyiv and the honorary consulate in Kharkiv. This pattern of attacks raises serious concerns about the safety of foreign investments in Ukraine and undermines regional stability.
These events highlight the growing risks for international companies operating in Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing conflict. The targeting of SOCAR assets underscores potential threats to investment and economic stability in the country, which could have long-term repercussions for Ukraine's recovery and development. From a diplomatic perspective, such incidents risk straining relations between Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Russia, potentially affecting broader regional security dynamics.
