Basketball Player Wins Olympic Gold After a Year in Russian Prison.
American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was imprisoned in Russia after being detained on charges of drug smuggling, won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. This news is reported by Reuters.
The athlete, who played for a Russian basketball club, was detained in February 2022 at a Moscow airport. She was sentenced to nine years in prison, although she had a medical permit to use cannabis oil.
After lengthy negotiations and international pressure, Griner was released in December 2022 as part of an exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
«I didn't think I would be here. Be here winning gold for my country, representing how my country fought so hard for me just to stand here. This gold medal will hold a special place among the other two I was fortunate to win», Griner said after the final game.
After returning to the USA, the 33-year-old basketball player continued her sports career and joined the national team. She participated in the Olympics in Paris, which became a symbol of resilience and the fight for justice.
In the final match against France, where the score was 67:66 in favor of the USA, Griner showed outstanding skill and leadership qualities, making a significant contribution to her team's victory.
