The British Government Closes Legendary Store Due to Taxes: The End of an Era.
According to The Sun: A beloved family-run home goods store that has been in operation for over 100 years is closing its doors for good.
This traditional hardware store, affectionately named the Four Candles Store after the Two Ronnies sketch, gained popularity for its old-fashioned service and good advice.
After nearly 104 years, its owners have stated they can no longer make ends meet. They are currently having a sale before the closure.
The Center for Retail Research (CRR) warns that approximately 17,350 retail businesses will close this year.
Store Closure
Originating from Christchurch, Dorset, Castles Home Hardware has been in operation since 1922. However, after nearly 104 years, its owners have reported that they can no longer cope with expenses.
Bros. Brian and Gary Adams, who have worked in the store for many years, told the Daily Echo that the business has suffered due to a 'perfect storm': rising rent, inconveniences from roadworks, and changes in tax policy.

Brian said: 'The situation for small businesses is becoming increasingly difficult in the current economic climate, and with a heavy heart, we have to close our business after 104 years of trading.'
'There are four factors that led to this. The local council has lost control. I can no longer count how many times the road around has been closed for repairs. When this happens, it creates absolute chaos, and customers cannot find parking. Roadworks are happening again.'
'There is parking nearby for 150 spaces, which the council sold for housing development. People simply cannot park on that part of the street.'
'The government is withdrawing business tax relief, meaning that from next April, we will be paying up to £50,000 a year instead of £16,000.'
'Rising social security and minimum wage taxes are also not helping. We had to make staff redundant and not replace them as it's no longer economically viable.'
Among the store's customers, there is outrage: many express sorrow at its closure, calling it 'the end of an era' and thanking the Adams brothers for having sustained a traditional British store for so long.
Meanwhile, across the country, independent home goods stores are closing due to rising costs and the impact of online shopping.

This closure is part of an overall trend where small shops and businesses face severe challenges in a competitive market and adverse economic conditions. Many similar businesses are closing not only due to rising taxes but also due to increasing online sales, which significantly alter the retail landscape.
