Baerbock warned China about its position on the war in Ukraine.
The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock intends to draw attention to the impact of China's position regarding Russia's war against Ukraine on relations with Europe and Germany during her visit to Beijing on Monday.
She also stated that this relationship cannot be ignored during discussions on relations with China.
'The war in Ukraine shows how closely linked our security in Europe and Asia is. If North Korea sends soldiers and weapons against Ukraine, and Russia supports Pyongyang's nuclear program, it endangers peace here (in Europe) and in the Indo-Pacific region. Instead of taking responsibility for peace and security in the world as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China, with its economic and military assistance to Russia, acts against our fundamental European interests. Putin's brutal aggressive war against Ukraine directly threatens our peace. I will also say in Beijing that we cannot simply ignore this in our relations with China,' Baerbock stated.
She noted that during last week's G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting, it became clear that all countries advocating for the international order share the same concerns.
According to her, everything is interconnected in the modern world: climate policy cannot be considered separately from geopolitics, and Europe's security is closely linked to the security of other regions of the world.
Baerbock emphasized that cooperation and diplomacy are important, even with those who have differing views, but it is necessary to be realistic.
'As the largest economy in Europe, we advocate our interests but do not allow for the abuse of economic competition. In an interconnected world, economic policy is security policy,' said the German Foreign Minister.
She also noted that Germany and Europe will not turn a blind eye to violations of international rules and human rights in the interest of economic benefits. Baerbock supported the EU Commission in seeking solutions for a level playing field with China.
Before her departure to China, she also spoke with the EU High Representative, Borrell. After her visit to Beijing, she plans to meet with NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels.
