The large GAME network closes another store: what is known about the reasons.
Closure of the GAME store
According to The Sun: The well-known brand is closing yet another of its stores, which is a serious blow to retail. Previously, the company has already closed six other locations.
AlamyThe legendary store is closing its point in Ellesmere Port in Coliseum Shopping Park this month. The video game manufacturer GAME has officially announced this among other closures.
Although discounts of up to 20% have already ended, gamers rushed to buy cheap disks, accessories, and headsets. However, sources indicate that the shelves are already nearly empty.
This beloved brand, owned by Frasers Group, leads in the video game sector in the UK and is an important player in retail.
Frasers Group also owns House of Fraser and Sports Direct.
In addition to video games and accessories, the stores offer toys, electronics, smartphones, and collectible cards.
GAME, which has about 240 stores across the UK, has also lowered prices on some of its products by up to 20% in other stores that are closing.
In August and September, the retail giant announced the closure of six more of its stores in the UK, including locations in Eldon Square in Newcastle and in Galleries Shopping Centre in Bristol.
Retail challenges
In recent years, retail has faced serious difficulties due to a combination of various factors. Consumers are increasingly purchasing goods online, while stores are facing high costs for rent, wages, and energy.
The Centre for Retail Research notes that the sector has been experiencing a 'permanent crisis' since the financial collapse of 2008.
According to the Centre, 34 companies operating multiple stores ceased their activities in 2024, closing more than 7,500 retail outlets.

Businesses are warning of new closures this year due to rising insurance contributions for employers and wage increases. In particular, the rate of insurance contributions for employers has risen from 13.8% to 15%.
The national minimum wage has also been increased to £12.21 per hour.
Some popular brands have already announced mass store closures in 2025, including Poundland, Hobbycraft, and The Original Factory Shop.
In the context of rapid changes in the market situation and rising costs, the closure of GAME stores highlights the serious challenges that retail faces. This indicates that not only technology impacts purchasing, but the economic situation in the country also plays a significant role. It is clear that businesses will need to adapt to new conditions to survive in today’s competitive environment.Read also
