American chain Cinnabon has closed all its locations in the UK: reasons for the decision.
Cinnabon Closure in the UK
According to The Sun: The popular American bakery chain has suddenly closed all its locations in the UK.
Cinnabon, known for its cinnamon rolls, opened its first store in the UK in 2020 and currently has 12 locations in cities such as London, Manchester, and Birmingham.
GettyEG On the Move, which partnered with Cinnabon to enter the UK market, announced the decision to close all locations.
“EG On The Move made the strategic decision to close all Cinnabon locations in the UK.
“This was not a decision taken lightly but reflects a strategic shift towards focusing on our core convenience retail business.”
“This decision aligns with our broader business strategy to focus on areas where we can deliver the greatest value to our customers.”
Last week, customers were taken by surprise when several locations closed without prior notice. Notices were posted on the windows of some cafes regarding the closures.
One of them read: “We regret to inform you that Cinnabon will be closing its business on Monday, September 1. On behalf of our entire team, we sincerely thank you for your loyalty and continued support over the years. It has been our pleasure to serve you.”
The Cinnabon website in the UK also appears to be closed, and the location has become unavailable on delivery apps.
Cinnabon Product Line
Cinnabon is famous for its cinnamon rolls, made with special Makara cinnamon and signature cream cheese frosting. They also offered creamy 'Chillattas' drinks, iced coffees, churros, and cookies.
In the United States, the chain has nearly 1,000 locations. At its peak in the UK, Cinnabon planned to expand its chain to 150 cafes.
After opening, their locations gained significant interest, with people lining up to try their products.
Meanwhile, some customers expressed disappointment over the closure, voicing their complaints on social media. One commentator wrote: “@Cinnabon why did you close your stores in the UK… please reopen your stores, I really need that.”
Others expressed their thoughts on the high prices: “Very expensive, nice, but definitely too heavy for the stomach.”
Success of Other American Chains in the UK
Other American fast-food chains have fared better in the UK market for now.
For example, the burger chain Wendy's plans to open 400 locations, returning to the UK market after a 20-year hiatus.
Also, the Chick-fil-A chain is opening branches in the UK this year, and Popeyes, which debuted in 2021, already has over 38 restaurants within 30 months.
Shake Shack, which started as a hot potato stand, recently opened its first restaurant at a UK train station, allowing passengers to enjoy their favorite burgers before departure.
The closure of Cinnabon highlights the challenges faced by international chains trying to gain popularity in the UK. However, American brands that find the right approach continue to succeed in this market.
