Debts of 9 billion: Popenko evaluated whether it is possible to solve the problems of water utilities by raising water tariffs.
Water tariffs need to be reviewed in Ukraine - Association of Water Utilities
The President of the Association of Water Utilities of Ukraine and Deputy General Director of "Kyivvodokanal" for strategic policy Dmytro Novytskyi stated that it is necessary to review tariffs for water supply and sewage in Ukraine. He noted that the last Time the tariffs were changed was in 2021, but the government stopped the attempt to set new prices in 2023. Novytskyi stressed that water utilities are in a critical state as workers receive low wages, which jeopardizes service quality.
Expert doubts the effectiveness of tariff increases
The founder of the public organization "Union of Consumers of Public Utilities" and an expert in the field of housing and communal services, Oleh Popenko, is skeptical about Novytskyi's statement. He believes that raising wages for utility workers is a positive step, but the effectiveness of this measure raises serious doubts. Popenko points to existing problems in the industry, such as huge debts of water utilities for electricity, the need for repairs, and corruption. In his opinion, raising tariffs will not solve these problems but will only increase the population's debt for utility services.
Adjustment of utility tariffs begins
Recall that the National Bank of Ukraine previously announced plans to adjust prices for water supply, natural gas, hot water, and heating, despite their stability during the war period. The authorities plan to start this adjustment.
