Guidelines for Choosing Flight-Appropriate Clothing

According to TSN.ua: Andrea Fischbach, a flight attendant with American Airlines, has advised passengers to select safe and practical clothing for air travel, specifically recommending against tight-fitting garments and t-shirts. She emphasized that this choice is crucial for safety during an emergency evacuation. Fischbach explained that comfortable clothing can significantly ease the evacuation process, stating:

“Sliding down emergency evacuation slides is unpleasant and painful.”

According to the flight attendant, it is very important to be able to move slightly in your seat during the flight. She stressed that the optimal choice for flying is comfortable, non-restrictive clothing with long sleeves and pants. Among the undesirable options, Fischbach highlighted:

  • tight clothing,
  • high heels,
  • an excessive amount of jewelry and accessories.

The necessity of following these clothing recommendations is reinforced by a warning from Dr. Hugh Pabaru, who noted that tight jeans can increase the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, a potentially dangerous condition during the prolonged immobility of a flight. This medical perspective adds a critical health dimension to the advice on what to wear when flying.

Increasing Focus on Passenger Safety

This initiative from Andrea Fischbach reflects a growing focus on passenger safety in air travel, as well as the importance of making conscious clothing choices for a comfortable and secure journey. Airlines are increasingly communicating such practical tips to enhance the overall travel experience.

Ensuring passenger safety has always been a priority for airlines. Recommendations on flight attire can become an important component in the broader process of raising awareness about potential risks. It should be noted that comfortable clothing not only promotes in-flight comfort but can also reduce the likelihood of medical issues like thrombosis, which is particularly relevant for passengers traveling long distances.
