Ukrainian actress Larysa Kadochnikova, who played the main role of Marichka in the film 'Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors', argued against the idea of casting a Ukrainian actor for the role of Ivan. This was reported by TV presenter Miroslava Barchuk.

In the film, Ivan Palichuk was played by Ivan Mykolaychuk, a Ukrainian film actor, while the role of Marichka Hutyenyk was played by Larysa Kadochnikova, a Russian actress. Initially, they considered the option of approving Russian actor Hennadiy Yuhtin for the role of Ivan, as during the USSR, mainly Russian actors were chosen for leading roles. However, after auditions, it became clear that Mykolaychuk would be the best fit for the role of Ivan Palichuk.

But, according to Barchuk, Larysa Kadochnikova also did not support this idea and tried to convince the filmmakers to cast a Russian actor for this role. 'Larysa Kadochnikova was against Mykolaychuk playing Ivan and tried to convince Illienko and Paradjanov to take a Moscow actor. But luckily, Illienko and Paradjanov had enough talent and wisdom to refuse this idea, and we have a masterpiece film with Mykolaychuk's great performance,' Barchuk wrote.

The presenter thought long about whether to share this memory. 'Sometimes life gives a person an unexpected reward that seems disproportionate and undeserved. A huge reward that a person wishes to extract from their entire life until the moment of truth connects everything in its place,' Barchuk explained.

She ultimately published her memory after the scandal that arose due to Kadochnikova's refusal to perform in Ukrainian at the film award ceremony.

Part of the audience applauded the actress's decision, but many Ukrainians negatively reacted to this act.

'I admire the strength and talent of Ukrainian actors, and it is a pity that they had to endure the Moscow theatrical 'crowd' throughout their lives, which here claimed that they 'did a lot for Ukrainian culture' and felt a justified right to show contempt. Well, finally, the poisonous charms are ending,' Barchuk concluded.

Interestingly, Larysa Kadochnikova still holds the title of 'People's Artist of Russia'. In 2023, she stated that she sees no problem with this and reminded about her extensive film and theatrical career.
