Ian Dowie on the brink of bankruptcy

According to The Sun: Former star footballer and manager Ian Dowie may be facing bankruptcy due to a court summons from the tax authorities.

63-year-old Dowie, who coined the term 'bouncebackability', is facing a bankruptcy petition from HMRC. The hearing will be at the High Court.

This comes almost two decades after the former Luton, Southampton, and West Ham striker was hit with a large legal bill after leaving Crystal Palace.

In 2007, the court ruled that Dowie had fraudulently induced the club to waive a £1 million compensation deal upon his dismissal.

“It seems Ian's financial troubles may stem from those legal issues – there’s no other reason visible.”

“It’s a shame, as he’s a really nice guy, but he hasn’t taken opportunities in commentary as some other former players have.”

“But Ian is a smart guy, and I’m sure he will rise again.”

After Crystal Palace, Dowie moved to Charlton, but left the team after just 15 matches.

According to the contract, there was a clause that Palace would receive £1 million compensation if Dowie left the club to join another team.

The Northern Ireland international, who played 59 matches, worked in sales and as a commentator on Sky Sports after his career.

A new career and personal life

In 2023, Dowie announced his new position – he became a mortgage consultant at a law firm.

He joined Alexander Grace Law, located near Burnley, as a business director and led the refinancing team.

“While people may ask how I transitioned from the football field to the office, I have been working in real estate for four years, so when I was offered to join them, it made sense.”

Father of two, Dowie previously noted that he was lucky to be alive after a heart attack during a gym session in Chorley, Lancashire.

After being assisted by other gym-goers and paramedics, Dowie urged more people to learn the basics of CPR, noting that he survived thanks to the “wonderful help of everyone involved.”

Dowie is famous for coining the term “bouncebackability,” which he used to describe Crystal Palace's return, which was later included in the Oxford Dictionary in 2005.

A celebrity representative did not respond to requests for comment.
