According to The Sun: 24-year-old Mia O'Brien, a law student from Liverpool, is fighting for her freedom after receiving a 25-year prison sentence in Dubai for drug trafficking. She claims she became a victim of her friends, as she was detained at a party where 50 grams of cocaine were found.

In the prison where Mia is held, the conditions are horrific, and testimonies from other inmates point to numerous cases of cruelty from the guards. One British woman who shared a cell with Mia described their living conditions:
“There is no light, and the toilets are terrible,”- she said.

Mia's mother, Daniel, launched a fundraising campaign to appeal her daughter's sentence, believing she became a victim of “brutal injustice.” The woman notes that Mia only committed “a very foolish act.”

Conditions in Al Awir Prison
Mia O'Brien is held in the central Al Awir prison in Dubai, where the detention conditions raise serious concerns. This facility is designated for both men and women; according to the British government, one of the four blocks is allocated for women. Testimonies from former inmates indicate violence from guards and cruel treatment.
Former inmates share horrifying stories of human rights abuses, including brutal treatment and lack of proper living conditions. Cases of torture of detainees are also mentioned.
