U.N. Condemns Nighttime Strike on Kyiv; Guterres Demands an Immediate Ceasefire.
U.N. Condemns Attacks on Ukrainian Cities
According to UATV: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned Russia's overnight bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on July 2. Calling for an immediate halt to hostilities, he stressed the urgent need to safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure.
U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric voiced deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Ukraine, noting that strikes on densely populated areas are causing heavy civilian casualties. He emphasized that any attacks targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure constitute a clear violation of international humanitarian law and must stop without delay.
Rising Civilian Death Toll
According to the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, the number of civilian casualties increased by 40% between December 2025 and May 2026 compared to the same period the previous year. In Kyiv alone, the death toll has climbed to 30. These figures highlight the escalating conflict and its devastating impact on non-combatants.
The statements from the U.N. Secretary-General and his spokesperson underscore the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, driven by ongoing military operations. The sharp rise in civilian deaths makes clear that urgent international action is needed to protect people suffering from the conflict. This situation demands the global community's attention, as actions violating international humanitarian law risk long-term consequences for regional security and stability.
