Britain successfully tested the Spear cruise missile with a range of up to 100 km.
The British Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy will receive a new advanced cruise missile, Spear. Following the successful test of the missile, it received high praise from military experts, reports the British Ministry of Defence.
This missile is called Spear and it is part of a new generation of small cruise missiles. During the tests, the Spear missile was launched from a Eurofighter Typhoon jet by BAE Systems at the Vidsel test range in Sweden.
According to military experts, this missile can be used against air defense systems, ships, tanks, buildings, and fast-moving vehicles. F-35 bombers will be equipped with these cruise missiles and will be able to operate from airbases or aircraft carriers like the 'Queen Elizabeth', noted representatives of the military department.
The Spear 3 testing was the first involving control and software launches, where the missile hit ground targets, including the T-72M1 tank.
The Spear 3 cruise missile is an upgraded version of the Brimstone air-to-ground missile with a turbojet engine PBS TJ150 and a wing. This allows the missile to be launched at a range of up to 150 km.
Spear 3 missiles have compact dimensions, making them convenient to use with under-wing launchers, allowing the Typhoon jet to carry up to 18 missiles of this type. However, this type of aircraft does not anticipate integration with these cruise missiles. The F-35B can carry up to eight Spear 3 missiles.
It is worth noting that another new military aid to Ukraine from the USA is the American Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) glide bombs with a range of up to 110 km.
