The British Army has unveiled the new main battle tank Challenger 3
The Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2024 exhibition in Millbrook became the venue for the presentation of the new main battle tank of the British Army - Challenger 3. A total of 148 tanks are planned to be upgraded, two of which have already been presented at the exhibition, reports Army Recognition.
Challenger 3 has received significant technical improvements compared to its predecessor - Challenger 2. The main changes include the installation of a new 120mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, which has greater firepower and is compatible with NATO ammunition. The tank also received new modular armor developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, which provides an increased level of protection and facilitates repair.
The tank is equipped with a digital architecture, a network system for real-time data exchange, advanced surveillance systems, a thermal imager, and improved mobility thanks to a new engine and upgraded suspension. The tank's maximum speed reaches 60 km/h.
According to plans, from 2024, Challenger 3 tanks will be put into service, and their number will be 140 units.
