Prospect of bankruptcy for Bodycare

According to The Sun: The health and beauty store chain Bodycare, which has 149 outlets in the UK, is on the brink of bankruptcy, putting 1,500 jobs at risk.

According to Sky News, Bodycare is likely to appoint administrators from Interpath Advisory as early as Friday.

This chain, once profitable and known for its L’Oreal and Nivea products, began experiencing financial difficulties at the start of the pandemic.

Bodycare was founded over 50 years ago in the Lancashire market. It has worked with consulting firm Interpath and its owners, Baaj Capital, trying to find a way out of the situation.

The CEO Tony Brown, an experienced retail expert, previously worked at BHS and Beales.

Baaj Capital, led by Jass Singh, recently secured a £7 million loan against its stock to buy time, but efforts to save the business have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

The appointment of administrators will likely accelerate the search for buyers for parts of the business. They will be able to take control of the company and decide whether it can be saved, sold, or closed entirely.

This could lead to the closure of many stores, job losses, and issues for suppliers. Additionally, customers risk losing the value of gift cards.

Retail situation

If Bodycare closes, it will be another blow for retail in the UK, which is already facing numerous challenges. Not long ago, River Island and Poundland avoided bankruptcy by agreeing on restructuring plans that involved store closures and job cuts.

Poundland plans to close 68 stores and also review rents across 180 locations and discontinue frozen food offers and online shopping. Starting in September, customers will no longer be able to place online orders.

Thus, the situation in retail in the UK continues to deteriorate, with experts predicting the closure of another 17,350 stores this year.

“The results for 2024 show that while the data on store closures overall is not as dire as in 2020 or 2022, it is still concerning, with even worse prospects for 2025,” said Professor Joshua Bamfield.
