According to The Sun: The large supermarket chain Asda has announced the opening of its first Express store in the UK, marking a significant step forward for consumers.

This event marks the start of a large-scale national expansion that plans to open up to 20 new stores by the end of the year.

The retail giant Asda has started its operations in a new Express store in Castleford, West Yorkshire. This is the first time the company introduces its famous yellow-green brand in a small store format to compete with Tesco Express and Sainsbury's Local.

The new store, located at the site of a former pub on Holywell Lane, has been transformed into a modern mini-market offering over 3,000 products.

From ready meals to fresh fruits - now consumers can quickly find everything they need in one place.

The store operates daily from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, making it convenient for early birds, night owls, and those in urgent need of milk late at night.

Additionally, there is a Costa Coffee machine, an ATM, and an Amazon pick-up point, as well as the option to order via Uber Eats, Just Eat, or Deliveroo.

Shopping discounts

Asda notes that the new Express format is designed to bring its traditionally low prices and discounts to areas with limited presence of the chain.

New stores are expected to appear in bustling city centers, transport hubs, and even residential areas.

This is part of the supermarket's mission 'to bring unbeatable value to even more communities' across the UK.

Joseph Sutton, Asda's Vice President of Express, Foodservice, and Fuel, stated:

Rapid growth

Asda first introduced the convenience store format in 2022, and since then it has been rapidly expanding.

The supermarket plans to open around 500 Express stores by the end of the year, with even more planned for 2026.

Each store will also be equipped with electronic shelf labels (modern digital price tags) to streamline staff operations and ensure price clarity for customers.

So, whether you are stopping by for bread and milk or a quick lunch, you may soon visit an Asda Express store nearby.

This comes after Asda announced discounts on nearly 1,000 everyday items.

Discounts will be available in stores and online, including large discounts on staples such as pasta, cooking sauces, as well as tea and coffee.

At the same time, Asda is following the lead of three other major supermarkets by implementing significant changes across the aisles of 186 stores starting in October.

The supermarket has also introduced special menopause aisles, similar to the online grocery store Ocado.

This initiative aims to “raise awareness and understanding of the menopause experience,” said Matt Pride, senior buying manager at Asda.
