London Asda closes due to sharp rise in rent: what about employment.
Closure of Asda supermarket in London
According to The Sun: The large British supermarket Asda will close one of its stores in London this weekend. The branch in Anchor Retail Park in Stepney Green is closing, resulting in the loss of 50 jobs.
Google MapsThe reason for the closure is a significant increase in rent proposed by the landlord. An Asda representative stated that the rent hike 'would make the store financially unviable.'
'We understand that this news may be disappointing, but we want to assure customers that they will be able to find all their favorite products and great Asda prices at our nearest supermarket in Isle of Dogs.'
The closure has already been described as 'devastating' by GMB union representatives. Kit Dixon, regional officer of GMB, commented:
'This is devastating news for the store's workers, many of whom have worked at Asda for years.'
He added:
'We hope that most will be able to transition to neighboring stores, but if that does not happen, there may be job losses.'
Local residents have until Sunday, September 7, to bid farewell to the supermarket before its final closure. Some shoppers have called this closure 'unfortunate' as it was the closest store to their home.
However, other shoppers are taking the situation more calmly. One resident directly stated: 'happy farewell' to the supermarket.
Asda has 1,200 supermarkets across the UK, and customers can find the nearest store by visiting their website.
Additionally, Asda's management mentioned issues with order fulfillment and deliveries due to a £1 billion IT upgrade, resulting in 'temporary stock availability issues' in stores and online.
Asda CEO Allan Leighton noted that the modernization will continue until the end of September.
Challenges in retail
This closure comes amid challenging times for retail, as many chains are facing declining consumer demand against rising costs. For instance, River Island plans to close up to 33 stores, while Poundland plans to close 68.
Moreover, last month, Claire's announced bankruptcy, but all 306 stores in the UK and Ireland will remain open.
The situation in the retail market remains tense, as companies continue to seek ways to adapt to new conditions. The closure of the Asda store in London is yet another indication of the challenges facing this industry in a difficult time. It is expected that businesses will have to take additional measures to maintain competitiveness amid rising costs and changing consumer behavior.
