AI Boom Provokes Revival of US Gas Energy – Media.
Energy companies in the US plan to build new natural gas power plants
American energy companies are rapidly responding to the increased demand from artificial intelligence data centers, manufacturing plants, and electric vehicles, which consume a lot of electricity. This is becoming possible thanks to the resilience of gas, which has become the primary source of electricity in the US. Experts had previously predicted the end of the era of rapid growth in domestic gas demand.
"A few years ago, there was an expectation that solar and wind energy could cover our additional generation needs," said Jed Dorsheimer, head of the energy and environmental sector at investment bank William Blair.
Forecasts show that up to 60% of new electricity generation will depend on gas. In just the first six months of this year, companies announced plans to build more new gas power plants than the entire last year. In total, more than 200 gas plants are planned to be launched by 2032, providing an additional 86 gigawatts of electricity. Considering the growth in electricity consumption by data centers, consumption could increase tenfold by 2030.
In addition to building new plants, some companies will be closing old gas power plants more slowly than expected.
