Statements by Karel Havlicek regarding the removal of Ukrainian flags

According to inkorr.com: Karel Havlicek, the first deputy leader of the ANO party in the Czech Republic, shared his opinion on the gradual removal of Ukrainian flags from state institutions. In his view, these flags 'have fulfilled their symbolic function.' The politician expressed his thoughts during an interview on Radio Prague International.

Havlicek noted that the removal of flags from state buildings should occur gradually. He emphasized that these symbols should be taken down, but this process will not be instantaneous.

'Of course, the flag will be taken down at some point, but we definitely won't do this on the first day. However, I believe that these flags should be removed from state institutions. I don't see anything wrong with that,
- noted Havlicek.

The politician also added that if he were to get a ministerial position, he might remove the European Union flag from the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

These statements came against the backdrop of the decision by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, Tomio Okamura, to remove the Ukrainian flag from the parliament's facade. Okamura, the leader of the right-wing populist SPD party, characterized the use of Ukrainian flags on state buildings as 'excessive politicization.' Currently, three other parliamentary factions have also installed Ukrainian flags in their premises, expressing their support for Ukraine.

Discussions about removing Ukrainian flags from state institutions in the Czech Republic are ongoing among politicians who believe that these symbols have fulfilled their cultural function. Havlicek advocates for a smooth process, while lively debates arise among representatives in parliament regarding the appropriateness of using Ukrainian symbols. The initiator of this discussion was the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Tomio Okamura, sparking numerous debates in Czech society.

In the Czech Republic, the issue of removing Ukrainian flags has gained relevance amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and changes in the country’s foreign policy. This discussion reflects not only changes in state policy but also the perception of the Ukrainian issue within Czech society, where opinions are divided.
