Preparing for Christmas with Savings

According to The Sun: Christmas is just around the corner, and many are thinking about how to save money on major holiday purchases.

Many shoppers plan to use their loyalty program points from supermarkets to get discounts on their purchases.

Selecting the best offers for shoppers

Major grocery chains like Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, and Sainsbury’s are already offering Christmas cards for savings to encourage customers to improve their spending.

What are Christmas savings schemes?

These schemes are designed to help shoppers save money in the lead-up to Christmas when expenses usually increase.

During this period, shoppers can top up their cards in-store, and supermarkets add a small bonus.

These programs can be beneficial for those who regularly shop in a particular place, although they offer less flexibility than traditional bank savings.

You can only spend your funds in specific stores, and in case of emergencies, you won’t be able to use these vouchers for other needs.

Bonuses are paid only on specific days, so sometimes you have to wait to receive your benefit.

However, many shoppers like these programs as it's a straightforward way to earn extra money from their favorite retailer.

Different supermarkets offer different amounts of savings, with bonuses typically credited a few weeks before Christmas.

Asda – £15

Asda offers a Christmas savings card to help customers prepare for the holiday.

This gift card can be topped up at any time, and in November, the supermarket provides a bonus based on your balance.

The more you save, the bigger the bonus you will receive:

  • £1 bonus for saving between £30 and £79
  • £3 bonus for saving between £80 and £129
  • £6 bonus for saving between £130 and £179
  • £9 bonus for saving between £180 and £229
  • £12 bonus for saving between £230 and £279
  • £15 bonus for saving £280 or more (maximum amount on the card)

However, keep in mind that these bonuses do not accumulate. If you top up the card with £80, you will receive only £3, not £4.

The maximum bonus is £15, regardless of new top-ups to the card.

This year, the deadline for topping up the card is 5:00 PM on Sunday, November 9.

The bonus will be credited by 9:00 AM on Monday, November 11.

You can register for the card at www.asdagiftcards.com/cards/asda-christmas-savings-card.

Customers can top up their cards both in-store and online.

Tesco – £12

The Tesco savings scheme is also available for shoppers planning holiday purchases at this supermarket.

Like Asda, you need to top up your Clubcard card through the Tesco app or the Clubcard website during the year.

If you are interested, you need to convert your regular Clubcard vouchers into Christmas vouchers, doing so by October 16.

In November, Tesco will send you vouchers based on your savings that can be used during the holiday sales.

You can also top up your savings throughout the year from your funds.

The maximum bonus is £12, and the savings amounts look as follows:

  • £1.50 bonus for saving between £25 and £49
  • £3 bonus for saving between £50 and £99
  • £6 bonus for saving between £100 and £199
  • £12 bonus for saving between £200 and £360

You can redeem your vouchers on the Tesco website, in-store, or at the fuel station.

Sainsbury’s Christmas Club Card – £25

Sainsbury’s also has a similar offer for shoppers looking to save before Christmas.

Customers can start topping up their cards at the beginning of the year, and rewards will be issued in November.

Shoppers receive a 5% cash bonus, amounting to £2.50 for every £50 you have on the card on November 1.

The maximum amount that can be placed on the card is £1,975, but Sainsbury’s stops bonus credits when the balance reaches £500.

The maximum benefit is £25.

This is the highest savings, but shoppers must spend more money to get returns than required in other supermarkets.

To receive the bonus, it's recommended not to spend the remaining funds until November 2.

You can top up the card both in-store and online.

Morrisons – £6

The Christmas saving card from Morrisons is linked to their More app.

Purchase stamps in-store by asking the cashier how much you wish to top up.

Then you need to scan the Morrisons More card to link the stamps to your account.

Customers must log into the app on their smartphone to check their savings.

The deadline for buying stamps is October 31, 2025.

Your savings will be converted into a voucher that can be used for purchases until Christmas.

The maximum bonus you can receive is £6, and the savings amounts look as follows:

  • £1 bonus for saving between £49 and £96
  • £3 bonus for saving between £97 and £145
  • £4 bonus for saving between £146 and £193
  • £6 bonus for saving £194

Remember that you cannot receive a balance from the voucher, so all saved funds must be spent in one go at the store.

Many supermarkets are implementing Christmas savings schemes to help shoppers not only prepare for the holidays but also save money. Customers actively use these offers, as during times of economic hardship, holiday expenses can significantly impact the budget. Understanding these schemes will help plan expenses more rationally and save on holiday purchases.
